OUR STORY

The story of how an unsuspecting Shih Tzu gave birth to an eternal love.

AS TOLD BY THE GROOM

On a cold, rainy night in the unforgiving Seattle winter, I met my bride-to-be for the first time at an arthouse cinema. I chose the venue because I was desperate to impress the cultured, talented artist who had somehow agreed to go on a date with me. We made our first real connection

when we texted back and forth while watching The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant on opposite ends of the country. It was the perfect setting to pick up where we had left off over text. Standing on the sidewalk, eagerly anticipating her arrival, I envisioned a perfect date.

I could tell there was something special about this girl, and I couldn’t wait to finally meet her in person. And when she finally arrived….I fell flat on my face. I had suddenly forgotten the ability to speak. I was spending an evening with a beautiful woman, and I had nothing to give.

Now, if you ask me, it’s clearly because her ethereal beauty entranced me. But if you ask Henna (and you should ask Henna), I was a terrible first date. The only thing worse than the tension was the movie we had paid to see. The rest of the date was largely forgettable, but I did manage to earn myself a second date with a goodnight kiss.

Mission accomplished.

Henna thought the second date was my last chance to prove myself. I invited her to my apartment for a home-cooked meal. A more comfortable environment would bring out my personality, which I insisted did, in fact, exist. Knowing my love for dogs, she also brought her pup, Milo. My face lit up with joy when they walked in the door. Milo curiously sniffed the entire apartment while Henna and I talked as I made dinner. It was a perfect evening despite Milo relieving himself on my living room rug.

It’s hard to imagine that all of this happened only three years ago, as it feels like we’ve known each other for a lifetime. But in just those three years, Henna has changed my life in ways I never imagined. Every day, she makes gloomy Seattle the brightest place on Earth.

Since that night at the theater, we’ve built a beautiful life together, and we owe it all to a Shih Tzu named Milo.
